Plum Sauce

I had my first Winter League game last night against Damn!, Mike Bell's team. This is my third year playing Plum Sauce, a team that Sandy, Whit, and the Oxy guys put together. The team is much different than it was at the beginning---Whit, Steve, Claire, Melanie, Chloe, and Ben are all gone. It's really odd playing without them. I suppose Milkboy and Hanes were missing last night and their presence will make the team seem more Plum Saucy.
Damn! is the team to which we lost last year in the Winter League finals. They were mostly carried on the huge back of Cy, who has since moved to Boston (and plays with Brian, Trina's older brother, and Jake Eberly, HWRHS alumn and Catey Eberly's older brother, on Twisted Metal). We were supposed to have a warm-up game last week but the uncommon rainfall kept us off the fields so we had to start the season with a very difficult match-up.
Anyways, we started off badly, giving them an early lead of 4 - 2 or so that we never could make up first half. Nicole and Sandy were getting (justifiably) frustrated with the offensive play of many of our men, who repeatedly put up ill-advised hospital hammers and hucks. We reconnected during half, down at 9 - 7, and remembered that we are Plum Sauce: we always have fun, play hard, and are incredibly better looking. We stepped the intensity way up on defense and earned some blocks. On offense, we played around their force middle and poaches much better, still managing scores despite the Condor savvy of Brian Bogle and Corey Sanford.
Damn! has a spread of young athletes and old, wiley throwers and they did not do a good job of mixing these groups. Consequently, when the old guys played offense and turned it, we always had one or two huge mismatches to go deep or go every other. When the younger guys earned a defensive block, they were often ineffectual on offense. It seems like they would correct such an obvious problem.
We played much better second half, always hitting the open cut and increasing defensive intensity, and we finally reached 15 - 15. At this point, we received and quickly scored and then pulled and were scored on. We began universe point and were within 20 yards of the end zone with the disc in our possession when the lights went off.
Boooooooo!
So, the game ended as a tie. I guess we won't know until the finals. I'm happy with the result, as I had a great time playing and just generally love ultimate. Our offense needs to be much cleaner and we need to use our women more effectively, even though it's only 5 / 2. Seriously, who in the league can handle having any two of Nicole, Syd, and Lindsey on the field at the same time?
Post sauce, post sauce, you read like Plum Sauce.
