Weekend Recap, Part I

My weekends never turn out as expected or planned. I always hope for productivity and progress on the house and exercise and cooking but never follow through as much as I should. I should have painted the living room. I should have cut down trees in the backyard. I should have fixed up the main bathroom with a shower mount and new towel racks.
I accomplished none of these tasks. I regret nothing.
My first pleasant diversion was the arrival of Matty and Yip from San Diego on Friday night. We stayed in the house short minutes before embarking again for some much needed Chipotle and much less needed Episode III. I can honestly say that the burritos were better than the movie. I found the lightsaber battles stale and uninspiring. The acting and dialogue were flat and emotionally uninvolved---I didn't buy any of the relationships between the characters. The final battle between Obi-Wan and Anakin was particularly anticlimactic.
Saturday morning we awoke early, hungry from the disappointment of the night before, to head to the Saviors of Kamigawa Prelease Tournament---yes, yes, I know: huge nerd. We all opened decent cards, with Matty and Yip both getting particularly strong decks. Yip finished 4-0 while Matty and I both were 2-2. We happened to land in the same wave as Ian, a fellow Mudd CS graduate, 2004. Ian conveniently bought the packs we won, which, along with selling our rares to the vendors, significantly lowered the price of the whole event.
The funniest moment of the day was seeing Doug Baker at one of the tables, playing Magic like Caltech nerd he still is. For those of you who do not know, Doug is the ex-captain for Caltech Ultimate who got a deep, raspy voice by playing for Black Tide for a year then moved onto better ultimate by punching a Sack Lunch player in the face at Southwest Club Regionals last fall, earning him a two year suspension from UPA events. He was even wearing an ultimate tshirt. Hilarious. I had no desire to go talk to him.
The even somehow lasted until far past 4 o'clock PM so we were absolutely famished, quickly devouring Taco Nazo and horchata. Yip headed to Pasadena to visit some old gaming friends while Matty, Brian and I played pickup ultimate at CMC.
I will write more later---this post is getting too long.

I thought that Yoda's light saber skills in episode II were ridiculous, especially since he walks with a cane. However, when he threw the saber into a clone's chest, pulled it out, then continued fighting, I felt the force.
