Day 2—Progress?
I had a reasonably busy day at work: Professor Bright needs seven laptops with MATLAB ready to travel to Japan on Friday. I configured the first machine for him to test tonight and report on tomorrow. Getting the laptops ready should not be a problem; I just need to be focused tomorrow and start right away.
I noticed today, as I perused systems administrator openings in Seattle, that MCSA or MCSE certification is viewed highly by those hiring. I do not doubt that I could be certified in the next few months but I am not sure I want to spend the money. MCSE requires seven tests each priced at $125. I would likely have to invest in preparation materials as well. I suppose I will apply for jobs without the certification and then assess the need based on my success or lack thereof.
I switched from TurboTax to H&R Block TaxCut this year, based on the lower software price and the e-file rebate it offered. I completed my federal and state return all today---much faster than I did last year. I had fewer complications in this year's return, given my lack of (self-employed) contracting. I also concerned myself little with small deductions, as the obscene amount of mortgage interest Brian and I payed gives me a sizable refund.
I am not sure what I will do with this incoming money. My cousin Cynthia and her husband Jay urged me to travel and enjoy myself while I am between jobs this summer. On the other hand, I will certainly buy a new Honda in the next few weeks and could double the amount I put down. Also, I should have a sizable chunk of change from selling the house this spring. Ostensibly, that money should be saved away for my next home purchase and capital gains taxes. Ah well.
I picked my father's brain concerning my imminent automobile purchase. He agreed that Hondas are a superior option to all others and that buying a new car is always safer---he had bad experiences buying used cars directly from the owner. My father's opinion is that I should buy a new Honda Civic. I would agree but I became tempted by a Certified Used Accord I found online. Lust! In defense of the used Accord, it comes with dealer warranty and certification of proper function. Finally, my father gave me some strong pointers regarding price negotiation and financing. Soon, I will report on my decision.
Lastly, I ran my old three mile loop at lunch and then lifted upper body for twenty minutes or so. This activity does not quite meet the standards I set but I feel it was a good step.
Trina is here, and I must bid you goodnight. All in all, I declare Tuesday a good day.
