Interlude: New Lei-Out Beach Ultimate Design
Check out the new design I finished tonight for Lei-Out Beach Ultimate.
Yes, yes, I know the rest of Regionals must be discussed but right now my need to sleep is a bit greater. Goodnight.

Wow, that design is so LA. Looks like there should be a booming promo voice for a huge concert. Just remember, the fans want a three day tournament.

Joaq, you’re always talking about what the fans want. Just who are these fans? If the answer is the general public, they can take a walk off the pier. If the answer is Jughead and you, ask and ye shall receive.

The fans are pretty much Jughead and I. It’s true. Sometimes the fans include other Brains like Prude and Shy, but usually it’s just Jay and I.

Hi, I’m posting anonymously so that I don’t feel like I have to pull any punches.
The lei-out website is the most unreadable website I’ve seen in a long time. I actually followed the “designed by” link at the bottom of the page so that I could try to figure out who in his right mind would voluntarily take responsibility for having created it. If your goal was to blind people rather than convey information than you should consider it a success. To try to protect the vision of the people who might view your future websites, I’ve compiled a short list of specific complaints in the hopes that you won’t assault people’s eyes like this again in the future. Specifically, the following things make the website illegible and painful to look at:
There are many more complaints I could make, but the ones above are (in order) the most important and most offensive, so I’ll just stop here and not get bogged down in minutiae. Please change your ways before you hurt someone.
P.S. I like the design of the drewd.com website. It’s easy to read and navigate, and I very much like the pictures. At first I assumed that the lei-out website must be some kind of joke; that it was intentionally offensive and poorly designed. But after a brief look around, I see nothing to confirm this suspicion other than the contrast between the design of the two sites.
P.P.S. Wait! I think I just figured everything out. Below this comment text box in which I’m typing, there’s an ad for eye surgery! It says “Is Lasik Right for Me?” and goes to http://www.lomaseye.com. I guess the idea is that the lei-out website will damage people’s eyes, they will follow the link to the drewd.com website to see who to complain to, and then they will see the add for eye surgery, click on the ad, and you’ll earn ad revenue, and maybe even a referral kickback, right? Wow, that’s genius. I guess you have this all figured out after all. Sorry if my post interferes with your plans, but someone had to say something. I think this is a despicable, disgraceful way to earn money. You prey on unsuspecting web-surfers on lei-out.com like a pedophile preys on teenagers on myspace. You should be ashamed. Very ashamed.

Hello, Nonny Mouse. I would take your comments more seriously if you did not conceal your identity. That’s my first response.
The front of http://www.leiout.com was not designed to be readable or usable in the standard sense. All I wanted was impact. Bright, high contrast, even eye-assaulting colors and large blocky text cease to be information and become an image. Think of the page as a splash screen or a placeholder, communicating tournament identity but, again, not information.
The text on the page doesn’t carry any substantial information because there is no such necessity. Lei-Out sells itself. Players know the tournament and know they want to attend. We were behind schedule on promoting the tournament so I threw the page together in a night just so we’d have something, anything, to show that Lei-Out was happening.
Compare the front page to http://www.leiout.com/registration/ which was designed before your comments. The registration page obviously needs to carry information and be usable and was implemented as such. This styling was subsequently applied to the pages for the Lei-Out Beach League: http://leiout.com/beach-league/
Lastly, see my comment above: regarding the “general public, they can take a walk off the pier.” I invite you to volunteer dozens, perhaps hundreds, of hours each year to help make a dream into a real live tournament. Or, more specifically, are you interested in setting up the cones for ~30 beach fields at 7:30 AM for three days straight?
