It’s Been a Year?

(NOTE: If you want to read this blog from The Beginning, click here, for the videos, click here).

That’s right folks, it’s been a year since we embarked on our trip. On that note, we wanted to lay this blog to rest. But, not without an update of course!

Just a week and a half ago, Whit and I moved back to San Francisco proper - Nob Hill to be exact. We had spent the last five months in Oakland, renting a room at our friend Mike’s house, where he lives with his girlfriend Vi and his cat Azul. We will miss all of them dearly.

I must admit though, it is wonderful to have a place of our own again; and the unpacking process has never been so enjoyable. About 75% of our things stayed in storage while we were living in Oakland, all in anticipation of being moved back to San Francisco. My parents came down from Portland to help with the move, which was done in a record-time of about 4 hours. It was great having them there - not only as extra hands, but helping to get our new apartment feeling like home right away.

We are almost done unpacking and putting things away and have been slowly tackling the task of choosing which pictures from the trip we want to frame, which is really difficult!

Otherwise, we are back in a routine. Whit is working as a video editor for Seesmic, and is finishing up a few free-lance jobs that started in the summer. I am back at my job that I had before I left - working in Account Services at a healthcare advertising agency. I’ve been playing rec soccer (go Heat!) and tonight we start Winter League for ultimate.

We’ll celebrate Thanksgiving Day with Whit’s relatives in Los Gatos, and then head up to Portland for Part II on Friday - where we’ll get to see my brother and his wife’s new family additions - Mikaela and Sebastian. Yes, twins! They’re so cute! (I went up at the end of October to meet them for the first time -they’re just little shrimps!) We’ll also celebrate Christmas with the Fisher’s in Portland before heading to Claremont and Pasadena to visit Whit’s family. Then, it’s off to Maryland to ring in the New Year with some old friends.

So, that’s a wrap. Please feel free to visit and revisit this page as your heart desires and to share it with friends who are debating taking a similar trip. We wanted to say thank you to everyone who followed and read regularly while we were away - it was so great to have support and know that we were missed as much as we missed everyone.

And now, a thought for the road:

“We shall not cease from exploration

And the end of all our exploring will

be to arrive where we started

And know the place for the first time.”

- T.S. Eliot

Much love and thanks,

Claire & Whit

Back in the Bay (but for real this time)

whitsashastanWe are officially back from our trip. 186 days went by and we were back in mainland USA. But, that was two months ago. In that time we have spent one week in LA, three in San Francisco, one in Humboldt, two in Portland, one in Seattle, with various camping stops in between. If you count that with the rest of the six months we traveled, we have been gone for eight months – crazy! We’ll be living in Oakland through August, and come September will hopefully have an apartment in San Francisco. Claire is job hunting and I am starting a production company, while doing various video jobs in the meantime.

The past month was a blast. We’ve seen friends and family all up and down the West Coast, playing ultimate, going to barbeques, watching 4th of July Fireworks, and most recently a camping trip with my family for me, and a baby/bridal shower for Claire (she’s not getting married or having a baby, she just went to one).

We have been posting photos along the way, and some videos are in the making. We’ll continue posting and updating our photos as time goes on, but I think the 186 Days may need a name change. I hear by open the blog up to you all for suggestions of new names. We’ll be keeping www.drewd.com/clairenwhit for the time being. The site has treated us well, and hopefully will continue to be viewed by all of our friends and family (and fans?) Stay posted… like I said, more videos to come.

PS – This is Claire now, I just have to tell a quick story about the bizarre night we had last night. We came into San Francisco from Oakland so Whit could pick up a hard drive from Hilary’s place. Sounds like an easy errand, right? Around 10:30 we walked out to the car to go back to Oakland, only to find Ted, a neighborhood guy, looking under our car with a flashlight. He said that he heard a cat meowing from under or in the hood, so we popped it open to take a look. By that time, Whit and I had heard the meowing as well, but it took a good ten minutes to actually see the tiny face of a kitten nestled in the engine. How it got there will remain a mystery to us. Coaxing it out with a can of tuna failed, as did jacking up the car to try to get the kitten out from underneath. That’s when we called Animal Care & Control, who responded pretty quickly with some serious tools. The ACC worker proceeded to poke around under the hood for fifteen minutes before getting the kitty out, who was covered in fleas but otherwise uninjured. Ted and his girlfriend adopted the calico kitten and left with the ACC worker to the animal clinic, debating between Jetta and Volkswagon for names. Whit and I got in the car to go back to Oakland, at which point it was 12:45am. Four blocks down the road on California Street, the clutch went out – literally dropping all the way to the floor. We got the car off the road and called AAA, who towed the car to a 76 Station. This morning, Whit went back and figured out the problem with the help of a Honda Parts Store employee, and Wendall from the 76. Turns out a bracket that holds a shaft for the clutch had broken off completely, and was all that needed to be fixed (or so we think). And thank goodness for that! Also, thanks to Hilary for letting us crash at her place after going through these two ordeals in one night.

An Update and Some Stats

Yesterday, we drove from Portland to Seattle with Cara and Slider. Over the weekend we had all played at Solstice, a tournament in Eugene. After a day of recovery in Portland, we packed up for a week of adventure before Potlatch. Today we’ll be heading out of Seattle to go camping with Cara and Slider, and possibly meet up with other folks coming into town for the tournament. The camping/Potlatch combo has been a part of our Fourth of July for the last four years, so we’re always looking forward to this time of year.

On a completely different note - a couple weeks ago, Drew showed us this website - created by a New York DJ who kept track of literally everything he did for a year. When we saw it, we thought it would be interesting to put together some numbers for our 186 Days of travelling; and here’s what we came up with:

Claremont Grads

So we’re still in Portland, preparing for a tournament in Eugene and then a trip up to Seattle. Cara just flew in, so we are reunited after not seeing her and Mike since New Zealand. But less talk about now and more videos of the past. Here is the late, but long awaited video of the Claremont Grads. I didn’t have to much time to film because most of the days were filled with friends, food and fun; not holding a video camera. Nonetheless, enjoy the video, and thank Drew for most of the photos at the end.
